Chemistry Laboratory Safety Rules

Some rules are not made to be broken—especially in the chemistry lab. The following rules exist for your safety and should always be followed. Always Follow the Instructions ​Your instructor and lab manuals are your best resources when setting up. Always listen and read carefully. Dont start a lab until you know all of the steps, from start to finish. If you have questions about any part of a procedure, get the answer before starting. Do Not Pipette by Mouth - Ever​ You say, But its only water. Even if it is, how clean do you think that glassware really is? Using disposable pipettes? Lots of people only rinse them and put them back! Learn to use the pipette bulb or automated pipetter. Dont pipette by mouth at home, either. Gasoline and kerosene should be obvious, but people get hospitalized or die every year. You might be tempted to use your mouth to start the suction on a waterbed to drain it. Do you know what they put in some waterbed additives? Carbon-14. Mmmm...radiation. The lesson is that even seemingly harmless substances may be dangerous! Read the Chemical Safety Information ​​A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) should be available for every chemical you use in the  lab. Read  and follow the recommendations for safe use and disposal of every material. Dress Appropriately (For Chemistry Lab, Not Fashion or the Weather)​ No sandals, no clothes you love more than life, no contact lenses, and, to keep your legs safe, long pants are preferable to shorts or short skirts. Tie long hair back. Wear safety goggles and a lab coat. Even if you arent clumsy, someone else in the lab probably is. If you take even a few chemistry courses you will probably see people set themselves on fire, spill acid on themselves, others, or notes, splash themselves in the eye, etc. Dont be the bad example to others. Identify the Safety Equipment Learn your  safety equipment  and how to use it! Given that some people (possibly you) will need them, know the locations of the fire blanket, extinguishers, eyewash, and shower. Ask for equipment demonstrations! If the eyewash hasnt been used in a while, the discoloration of the water is usually sufficient to inspire the  use of safety glasses. Dont Taste or Sniff Chemicals For many chemicals, if you can smell them, you are exposing yourself to a dose that can harm you! If the safety information says that a chemical should only be used inside a fume hood, then dont use it anywhere else. This isnt cooking class--dont taste your experiments! Dont Casually Dispose of Chemicals Some chemicals can be washed down the drain, while others require a different method of disposal. If a chemical can go in the sink, be sure to wash it away rather than risk an unexpected reaction between chemical leftovers later. Dont Eat or Drink in Lab Its tempting, but oh so dangerous. Just dont do it! Dont Play Mad Scientist Dont haphazardly mix chemicals! Pay attention to the order in which chemicals are to be added to each other and do not deviate from the instructions. Even chemicals that mix to produce seemingly safe products should be handled carefully. For example, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide will give you salt water, but the reaction could break your glassware or splash the reactants onto you if you arent careful! Take Data During Lab ​​​Always record information during a lab and not after lab--on the assumption that it will be neater. Put data directly in your lab book rather than transcribing from another source (i.e.:  notebook or ​lab partner). There are lots of reasons for this, but the practical one is that it is much harder for the data to get lost in your lab book. For some experiments, it may be helpful to take data before  lab. Were not telling you to dry-lab or cheat, but being able to project likely data will help you catch bad lab procedure before you are three hours or so into a project. Know what to expect. You should always read the experiment in advance.

A Queer Theory Written By Richard Blanco - 1134 Words

Everyone has their own take on controversial subjects faced in society, and no matter what age we live in, this particular subject seems to stay just as relevant in the generation before as it does today. The poem written by Richard Blanco titled à ¢ Queer Theory: According to My Grandmotherà ¢ (2012), which explains how the authorà ¢ s grandmother views his open gayness, as well as the photograph titled à ¢ Two Men Inspecting the Grass Closelyà ¢ (Details unknown), together deal with how society views the LGBT community, which is illustrated in the arguments of human identity, stereotypes held by others, and values held by society. First, the poem titled,à ¢ Queer Theory: According to My Grandmotherà ¢ is from the perspective of Richard Blancoà ¢Ã¢â‚¬ ¦show more content†¦Although this concept of what being queer really looks like is a topic bouncing throughout this poem, there is also the controversy of where the line is drawn between masculinity and femininity. As the poem goes on, the grandmother begins to get more outrageous with her commands stating à ¢ -shampoo is just for women. So is conditioner. So is moose. So is hand lotion.à ¢ (line 38-41), as well as à ¢ Men donà ¢ t cook- they eat. Eat everything you want, except: deviled eggs Blow Pops Croissants Cucumber Sandwiches Petit foursà ¢ (line 46-51). When the odd, demented requests start showing, one can only start to wonder where these rules can start to take a toll on oneà ¢ s self identity. With these types of remarks made by his own grandmother, the line is drawn and redrawn over again by what is considered the collective idea of à ¢ queerà ¢ by her generation. Although Blancoà ¢ s response or reaction is not shown anywhere in this poem, it must have hit him harshly. In oneà ¢ s path to finding their own sexual orientation it is a very common concept to either be out of the closet and proud or be very quiet and ashamed of what they identify with. This important step in self empowerment shapes human identity, the reality of being accepted by loved ones cannot be in lacking otherwise all forms of self expression is lost within hate. Events and Operations ABC London

Question: You have applied for a position of Events Manager/Organiser in ABC London Events Co.They are considering organising an event indoors or an open one outdoors (of your choice). The company asked you to provide a report in a format of a manualincluding key operational issues and risks that could be faced in these two venues. You should propose the best option to the events company in your conclusion. Answer: Introduction Events form an integral part of our routine lives with different levels, magnitude and type of event occurring in the neighborhood. Event management companies take up the responsibility of managing the event (indoor and outdoor) and apply business concepts in the theories of event planning. Use of some practical strategies is suggested to put the plans into action in an operationally refined manner (Getz, 1997). ABC London Events being a reputed firm is planning to organize two events indoor and outdoor at some specific locations and this report would dwell deeper into the event management operations and strategies to come up with creative event management plan (Yolum, 2002) of these two events including all the related aspects of the events. The Outdoor Event: A Sponsored Run There are some limited number of spaces available in Royal Park to conduct small scaled events in the space like a family picnic, a guided walk, a community sports, a concert, art events, recital events (Knemeyer, 2009). This is an outdoor spot available for small events. In some other gardens, large scale outdoor events can be arranged scaling to Olympic Games, music concerts and sports events. The event that would be organized in the Royal Park for the charity would be a sponsored run of a few hundreds of people to promote for a charity purpose. This run would be organized as a circular track and would include all the requirements of the run including medical support. This event is for the social cause of healthy lifestyle and for the refined physical, mental and social well being. These charity runs attract more number of participants including fund raisers, sponsors, volunteers, and non runners who wish to run for a social and charitable cause (Field, 2012) by giving their valuable contribution towards the society. These events are specifically associated with a basic theme of action and the participants comply with the theme to bring out the true essence of the charitable cause. The Indoor Event: Lunch for Business Proposal In the indoor campus, the Chelsea Old Town Hall can provide refined services for holding of special small scaled indoor events like parties, discussions, business meetings, business proposals, marketing events etc. The event organized at Chelsea Old Town Hall will be a business proposal for contributing to a charitable non government organization raised by that event. This business proposal can be very well arranged in the form of a lunch discussing a business proposal aimed at raising funds for charitable trust. The general requirements for the Chelsea Old Town Hall is that the hall is only available from 8am till midnight but the alcohol can be consumed only between 11 am to 11 pm. The constraint over music is that it must be closed by 11 pm for everyday and for every event. There is no AC facility but availability of standing fans so alternative facilities should be used for special occasions. The marketing of this event would be the responsibility of the event organizer. The sound system is only suitable for the public speaking activities (Field, 2012) but not for the music concerts. Attributes of the audience The audience in the event of sponsored run are of various age groups ranging from children to teenagers, from adults to aged people. The income does not matter for the choice of people that can participate in the charitable run and neither does the nationality matters. Anybody can participate in the sponsored run and can contribute for the charitable reasons. The participants of event at Chelsea Old Town Hall would be businessmen and elites that would discuss a business proposal that would be to raise funds and arrange sponsors for the charitable cause. Licenses and permissions required For the purpose of a sponsored run, it is required to have access to some of the licenses and permissions before starting up of the event. These licenses are required to ensure a healthy environment for the run and also ensure safety (Yeoman, 2004) of the participants. Some laws and licenses are issued for protecting the health of the sportsmen and voluntary runners and also prevent them from consumption of illicit drugs which curb the sportsman spirit (Earl, 2005) of the sponsored run. This would be a challenge for the organization as a huge amount would be required to ensure health and safety of the volunteers and participants. Wind turbines: Bane or Boon Essay A driving motivation in the quest for the discovery is the reality that the traditional sources of energy, such as fossil fuels, coal and the like, will eventually be exhausted (Think Quest, 1998). The current usage for wind turbine technology is at a projected 20 percent contribution to the power needs of the United States (Randall Swisher, 2006). Also, wind turbine technology does not emit any of the toxic gases and greenhouse gases attributed to the use of fossil fuels (Ian Callis, 2006). But, as stated earlier, the use of wind technology does bring with it a variety of disadvantages.Though wind power does not produce the pollution that is associated with the traditional use of fossil fuels, the use of wind turbines can have devastating on the areas residents living around the plant site (Think Quest, 1998). The larger wind turbines are equipped with long blades, or the so-called â€Å"egg-beater† type (Think Quest, 1998). These blades can measure up to 45 meters (148 feet) , making the rotation diameter reach up to 300 feet, or 90 meters (Wolfe Island Residents for the Environment). These large blades pose a danger to the birds that cross the paths of the turbines, as the location of these turbines are in the direct path of the migratory routes of some birds (Think Quest, 1998).This condition exists since the turbines need a high amount of wind for their efficient operation (Think Quest, 1998). Similar to solar power, wind turbine energy initiatives are not that efficient (Walter Youngquist, 2000). For the optimum wind energy facilities, the locations of these wind farms usually are situated in the areas where the air passes in between the hills (Youngquist, 2000). Also, the construction phase of the wind farm can prove to be detrimental to the wildlife in the area (Jack Green (International) Pty Ltd, 2005).The concern over bird casualties concern the instance that these might be killed or injured when they come in contact with the blades of the turbi nes (Jack Green, 2005). These also adversely impact on the migration, breeding and nesting patterns of avian wildlife, since these do affect the availability of natural habitat and emit noises that are harmful to the birds (Jack Green, 2005). With threat of these wind turbines causing more casualties to the avian wildlife, two United States Congressmen from West Virginia, Alan Mollohan and Nick Rahall, have requested the General Accounting Office to conduct a study on the adverse effects of the turbines on the state (James Taylor, 2004).Another concern is the maintenance costs of these facilities. As a rule, the standard rate is that the amount of the system being installed, say $400 dollars, one percent of that amount must be set aside for operation and maintenance expenses for the life cycle of the system (Mick Sagrillo, 2002).   So, if the cost of installation runs to around $50,000, then the costs for the year would amount to $500 (Sagrillo, 2002). The largest amount of stalle d operation time for wind turbines has to do with gearbox damage (Gerald Munson).It is more evident when one small bearing fails in the turbine. If a bearing costing $ 1,500 breaks, this could result in major expenses, like the need for a gearbox replacement costing about $100,000, $50,000 to rewind the generator, and paying $70,000 for a crane to get to the turbine itself (Munson). All for one turbine and the cost escalates if the turbine is located off shore (Munson). Sadly, the fact is that about 6 out of 10 turbines in the United States are behind maintenance schedules (Renewable Energy Sources, 2008).The main factor to consider in the construction of a wind facility would be the unreliability of a steady supply of wind (Clean Energy Ideas, 2008). Under these conditions, solar or geothermal initiatives can be considered as an alternative (Clean, 2008). Also, some countries have imposed a tax on renewable energy, making their prices higher than countries that have invested in oth er more conventional alternative forms of energy generation (Nuclear Info, 2008). As such, the contribution effects of wind as a viable energy alternative is still considered to be minimal compared to that of oil (Youngquist, 2000).;
